The shilajit supplement market is largely unregulated. Brands can make quality claims without substantiation. This page explains exactly how we evaluate resin-format shilajit products before any recommendation - including the criteria that automatically disqualify a brand.
Resin-format shilajit is the closest to the raw, naturally occurring exudate. That means higher potency potential - but also higher risk of heavy metal concentration if purification is inadequate. Capsule and powder formats often use diluted extracts, which reduces both potency and contamination risk proportionally. Resin demands the most rigorous verification.
Before evaluating any product, we contact the brand directly and request:
Response time and completeness of documentation are themselves quality indicators. Brands that cannot produce documentation within five business days are treated as unverified.
Once documentation is received, we verify it against three criteria:
1. Lab independence
The testing laboratory must be ISO/IEC 17025 accredited and have no financial relationship with the brand. We verify accreditation status independently.
2. Heavy metals compliance
Results must fall below USP and California Prop 65 limits for lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium at the recommended daily dose. We calculate per-dose exposure from the concentration data.
3. Fulvic acid declaration
The percentage must be stated numerically and confirmed by the CoA. Vague terms like "rich in fulvic acid" without a number do not pass this criterion.
Any one of the following disqualifies a brand from recommendation, regardless of other qualities:
🚩 No third-party CoA available
Without independent verification, all quality claims are self-reported and unverifiable.
🚩 In-house lab only
Manufacturer-conducted tests have an inherent conflict of interest and cannot substitute for independent testing.
🚩 Heavy metals above safety limits
Non-negotiable safety threshold. No amount of other quality factors compensates.
🚩 CoA date more than 18 months old
Formulations change. An outdated CoA does not cover the product on sale today.
🚩 Undisclosed additives or fillers
Proprietary blends prevent dose calculation and may mask poor active compound content.
Brands that pass the disqualification screening are scored across five weighted criteria:
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Lab documentation quality | 40% |
| Sourcing transparency | 20% |
| Processing method disclosure | 15% |
| Brand track record and longevity | 15% |
| Value relative to documentation level | 10% |
