Shilajit Benefits: What the Research Actually Says

Shilajit has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Modern research is catching up - but the published evidence is more limited than supplement marketing suggests. This page covers only claims supported by human or well-designed animal studies indexed on PubMed as of 2026.

Testosterone and male fertility

Two randomised controlled trials found shilajit supplementation significantly increased total testosterone, free testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in healthy male volunteers over 90 days. A separate RCT found improvements in sperm count and motility.

Fatigue reduction / energy

Fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones in shilajit appear to support mitochondrial electron transport chain function, increasing ATP synthesis. Human trial data is limited but consistent with the mechanism.

Cognitive function / Alzheimer's

Iron-deficiency anaemia

Claims That Lack Evidence

These are commonly marketed shilajit benefits with no credible published human research as of 2026:

  • Rapid weight loss or fat burning
  • Anti-ageing or lifespan extension in humans
  • Immune system "boosting"
  • Libido improvement in women (no RCT data)
  • Detoxification (unspecified mechanism)

Safety Profile

The safety risk with shilajit is not the compound itself - it is the raw material. Shilajit sourced from contaminated geological regions or processed without heavy metal removal can exceed safe limits for lead and arsenic.
